STAIRWELL AS VENTILATION SHAFT

Stairwcase with access to the roof
A huge bay with staircase above the entrance door to access the roof above this single-storey house. The rooftop terrace is surrounded by a wall the height of a person to provide privacy but can be recognized by some vertical drainage pipes.

Before the introduction of airconditioning to hot-dry climate zones like Qatar thermal comfort was provided mainly by natural ventilation or indoor airflow.
Stairwell as ventilation shaft
Here the stairwell of the building works also as a big ventilation shaft with mashrabiya latticework screen to vent and allow breezes circulate.
Stairwell for ventilation
A two storey stairwell which doubles as ventilation shaft leads up
to a light pavilion-like structure behind a decorative balustrade.
