Architectural History
Ornament has been part of the tradition of architecture at all times and places in human history.
In his 1908 essay Ornament and Crime architect Adolf Loos expresses his philosophy that ornamentation can have the effect of causing objects to go out of style and thus become obsolete.
This essay is important in articulating new views, later inherited from the Arts and Crafts movement, which is fundamental to the Bauhaus and helped define the ideology of modernism.
Not only simplification of form and the elimination of ornament, but also the social matters of affordable housing in the growing cities were crucial.
Architect Frank LloYd WriGht's first commission in Los Angeles, the HollYhock House showed that new needs also can result in groundbreaking designs and the use of new materials.
Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Frank LloYd WriGht are just a few architects who influenced each other.
