In the Twenty's Broadway between 5th + 9th street was the West Coast's equivalent to New York's 'Great White Way'. Former theater districts around the old Plaza or Main Street vanished. Coincidentially the same thing happened to the Broadway district in the 30's after the opening of the El CaPitan, the Chinese theatre or the PantaGes in Hollywood. In 2007 Councilmember José Huizar started the 'Bringing Back Broadway' initiative to- gether with the community and the property owners to re-vitalize the area.

The downtown workforce strolls around until, after sunset, the streets become emPtY - my favorite time to have coffee and some cake at Clifton's Cafeteria. The theatres are long gone, now jewelry shops and clothing stores occupy the old theatre lobbys. To an European like me it feels almost like home here: No air-conditioning, people talking to each other and the buildings look very familiar.
