The Ishtar Gate was constructed on the north side of the city of Babylon under the rule of King Nebuchadnezzar II. who reigned from 605 to 562 B.C.
His Babylonian empire stretched from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea.
Ishtar was the goddess of fertility, love, sex and war and the most powerful of all gods. Within the Epic of Gilgamesh she asks him to marry him but he denies.
Between 1899 and 1917 german archaeologist and architect Robert Koldewey excavated tons of glazed bricks, applying the new horizontal method. In 1927 the crates had been shippped to Berlin to re-construct the ancient architecture
